Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a rural district, with many low-lying farmlands and pastures. Some are still recovering from Hurricane Harvey. They face challenges most teenagers face, and oftentimes more. There are many at our school who struggle with reading, and that adds to their struggle.
They are great children, full of potential, and I am grateful to be their teacher.
I have academic students, students who excel in a trade, and students who do both. Our school is well-varied in the options it provides our students. My goal is not to push my students towards college, but to push them to their limits. I can't wait to see how high they soar!
My Project
Student learning styles are varied, but most of my students are visual or kinesthetic learners. This means that if there is a way for me to visually show them a concept, or a way to have them build or touch the concept, then that is what I need to do in order to effectively teach them.
When I came across this set of Happy Atoms, I knew it was the perfect solution for most of my Chemistry and IPC students.
It is similar to the traditional molecule-building kits, except it's magnetic and works with an app to provide additional information to the students. The students will use the pieces to build various molecules and then scan their creation with a smartphone or laptop and the app will give them information on the molecule they created. They would need to read this information, which is super important as literacy is one of our areas of need.
These would be used in so many for our units. I know it will be helpful when learning about individual elements, ionic and covalent bonding, formula naming, balancing equations, and chemical reactions. I requested the classroom bundle and 1 additional set so that I have a total of 6 sets- 1 for each lab station.
