My Students
I teach at a Title I school in which most students receive free or reduced-price lunches. They are English language learners, and most are translating for their families at home. School is a place not only to learn standards, but also a place to learn about American culture, world culture, and language. Music time allows them to speak a universal language. It allows them a time to be successful, proud, and to create without fear.
Though the school district I work for is committed to the elementary music program, there are very few resources for instruments.
I teach 800 elementary students (pre-school thru 6) and your generous donations will truly make a difference, providing meaningful musical experiences in my kids' lives!
My Project
I work in the third largest K-8 school district in California. My elementary school is called the "Music Conservatory" in the district because we put a high value on music education and have a deeper focus on music than any other public school in the region.
Music is universal and transformative.
It reaches across all cultures and is the ideal way to engage all learners. My classroom is a room where students (K - 6) create music and learn about their world through music. Students love to share their own music and to create and perform.
The drum set will allow my students to experience the joy of drumming on a full drum kit. Students as young as kindergarten will be able to explore the drum set in the band room. My older Drums/Percussion students will be able to transfer what they've been learning on individual drums and their practice pads to a drum kit. A whole musical world will open up for them!
