Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work as a speech-language pathologist in a high needs, low-income public school. Over 75% of students are from low-income homes. My school has the highest homeless population in the city at the elementary level and 100% of my students qualify for free lunch. In addition, over 70% of my students are considered English language learners.
My students, in particular, are special education students with speech and/or language disorders.
However, I often work inclusively with all students in various classrooms (grades pre-K-6). I have been popping in and out of their classrooms since preschool or kindergarten as I collaborate, support, and co-teach with other teachers in the building to build literacy and language skills.
Despite the everyday challenges these students face, my students come to school every day, eager to learn and show off their skills. Whether it be a preschooler who finally is able to ask for help, a kindergartener who can proudly answer a question about a story, or a second grader who is able to remember and retell a story for the first time, I love to see my students’ faces light up with pride for their accomplishments!
My Project
As a school SLP, my role is to assist teachers in enhancing language skills within the classroom to help students succeed. This includes embracing STEM and literacy activities.
Since many of my students with language disorders have difficulty with language and literacy concepts, it is so important for me to find fun and engaging materials to faciliate their language growth while supporting the curriculum.
Storybook activities are one of my favorite ways to engage my young students’ minds. Storybook activities build literacy, vocabulary, sentence structure, comprehension, expression, social skills, critical thinking skills, and problem solving skills. By incorporating repetition, visuals, simplified language, comprehension checks, and hands-on materials with storybook activities I can ensure that my students are getting the type of instruction they need to grow and learn. A good story will get a student to listen, but a great story will allow the student to become a part of the story!
The Fairy Tales STEAM Kit allows me to do all of the above. It uses classic fairytales to teach literacy and incorporates hands-on STEM activities. It is a multi sensory kit which includes storytelling visuals and aids to help all students become excited about reading and promote a love for STEM engineering concepts. After reading a story, students will be able to engage in activities such as retelling and sequencing the story with puppets, answer comprehension questions, identify character feelings and emotions, and complete STEM Challenges. All of these activities will provide students with so many wonderful opportunities to grow and learn!
