This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are English language learners in a Title I school in Baltimore City. Our nickname is "the school of many nations" because our student body represents a multitude of countries and cultures. Diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Our diversity is not just valued locally, but citywide as well, since families from different neighborhoods enroll their children in our school. Despite these virtues, ours is still an urban school in a struggling district. Over 90% of students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. New and appropriate materials cannot always be provided for our school. My students are clever, caring, and funny individuals who deserve access to high quality books, supplies, and resources.
My Project
Our classroom library is filled with science and reference books, but is sorely lacking when it comes to picture books. We're seeking to augment our library by adding classic and modern picture books.
Picture books inspire readers with detailed illustrations, relatable stories and accessible text.
Often with less than 500 words, picture books can be read in a single lesson and easily revisited to mine different layers of the story. The combination of images and text allow English language learners, especially newcomers, to access and gain meaning from the text. In addition, picture books are a great point of departure for difficult and weighty conversations. Besides all of those important reasons, picture books are engaging and offer students emotional connections to interesting stories.
By donating to our project you will be helping enhance our classroom library with high-quality picture books. From classics like "Where the Wild Things Are" and "The Snowy Day" to modern titles such as "A Bad Case of Stripes" and "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs," these picture books will find their ways into the hands of my students who are always hankering for a good book.
