Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Are we feeding the chickens today?" I get asked this question quite often while in our courtyard. I take the students into the outdoor classroom to learn in our garden at least once a month with every class. I teach Humanities so I get the privilege to teach the whole school! My focus is on science and teaching students about our world in a way that is interesting and meaningful.
My students are so inquisitive and willing to learn, they love learning all about Sweet Pea and Fancy, and can’t wait to introduce the new chicks, Peabo and Clover.
We are a Title I school, and all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of our students come from low-income families.
These supplies will help my students learn all about the world around them and I hope that you will consider our project! Thank you.
My Project
“I just love Sweet Pea.” The students in my classroom at my school have the unique learning experience of watching a chick grow and become a laying hen. They learn about the life cycle and how to care for the hens. With this project we can accommodate the newly hatched chicks! Currently we have 2 chickens Sweet Pea and Fancy. We are adding Peabo and Clover this year.
The chickens have become apart of our school family and everyone has a part in their care.
This project will allow us to have 3 extra nesting boxes that we can paint and make comfortable with the nesting pads. The feeder will help feed the chickens by hanging it up so they can’t tip it over. Our chickens enjoy their mealworm treats, as well.
