Let's get up and get moving! Save my kindergartners from mundane table work! We need hands-on manipulatives to allow us to make use of the sight words we know.
My kindergartners attend a school in a low economic area, classified as inner city.
Many of my students come to school hungry and dirty, but it does not take away for their love of learning. Many of them have not had exposure to many of the skills we are learning, but they are so open and ready to absorb the information. They love coming to school and growing in their knowledge. They are so proud with each skill they learn.
My Project
With limited space in the classroom and on the walls, often times students' workstations are confined to a table. The turning chart holder would allow a place for at least two workstations. This stand will hold pocket charts that will allow students to be up and physically manipulating materials, versus just having them sitting at a table, completing a paper/pencil activity.
The sentence builder will go hand-in-hand with the chart holder. This is just one example of the type of work that can happen on the stand. With the sentence builder, students are manipulating sight words that they know into helpful rebus sentences. Students will be able to create their very own sentences and be able to read them. They will build confidence and fluency in reading each time they use this.
We are given $100 a year to spend on materials.
In this type of community, often times that money is spent solely on basic materials for the students (glue, pencils, crayons-items that are not purchased by parents). I want my students to have the same opportunities and materials as students in other schools. I want them to know that there are people-even strangers- who care for them. What a difference DonorsChoose can make for my kids! Thank you for your support we are so excited about this!
