My students need storage for our dressing rooms. For productions, costumes are stored in our dressing rooms. Proper storage will not only keep our space organized but will also protect materials and save money.
Our school is a Title I school. Our student body is 92% minority, 11% English Learners, 7.2% Students with Disabilities, and 82% Socioeconomically Disadvantaged. We have a number of students in the Foster Care system, and several homeless families. All students are represented in our program at all levels of our program: those struggling academically, as well as those excelling; special education students, homeless students, foster care students, migrant students, students learning English as a second language. All students. Many of my students have rougher home lives than most of us can even imagine, and yet they find themselves and change their paths on our stage. My students come to me with hardly any exposure to theatre, and yet we accomplish amazing things, like being selected to perform at the 2016 Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland.
We beat the odds.
At our core, we all want to know that we are seen and heard; for our stories to be told. This is what I do and what my students do. We tell our stories, your stories, everyone's stories. We tell them through theatre--through writing, acting, sets, sound lights, and costumes.
We celebrate the human experience.
During productions on our stage, costumes are stored in the dressing rooms. However, there is no hanging storage, so costumes are crammed into tiny lockers, oftentimes ruining delicate fabrics and/or vintage pieces.
Having heavy duty hanging storage not only allows us to keep our dressing rooms more organized, but also protects costumes from damage, helping us work within our incredibly limited budget and saving money over the long term.
With this storage, our students learn to care for production materials but storing costumes properly. This storage will also teach students to respect the space, helping them maintain organization. With our costumes stored properly and items properly organized, our funds can be directed towards other needs instead of replacing ruined costumes.
