Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an inner-city school in Providence, Rhode Island. I teach 125 students each day in my grade 7 Social Studies classes. I have a diverse population of students which includes Special Education and English Language Learners (some which are newcomers to the country). Most of my students receive either free or reduced-priced lunch. Most kids come to school unprepared because of financial difficulties. I don't ever want my students feeling like they are unable to do an assignment because of the cost of supplies.
My Project
Every student should have the materials they need to go back to school! My 7th grade students use Interactive Student Notebooks (ISN) as a way of note taking, processing, and applying what they’ve learned in social studies class. My students need these notebooks to succeed in class by helping to organize their learning and transferring it onto paper. They use their notebooks for activities in class and at home. The ISN is organized by having a table of contents & numbered pages. This way information can be recalled much easier. However, the ISN has given me the opportunity to differentiate instruction for different learning styles, by having students choose activities on their process pages, which gives them more ownership of the entire learning process.
