My students need a new writing desk that gives them the right height and space to allow them the ability to let their imagination, creativity and pre-writing skills develop.
Our preschool class is made up of 15 three to five year olds. For many our classroom is their first experience in a classroom setting. The students come to school each day ready to explore, investigate, and enjoy their world. It is my goal to expose them to all the possibilities available to enhance their social and emotional skills. Our school is in a very rural area, where many of the students receive free and reduced lunch as well as Title I and NCPrek funding.
As students in a low-income/high poverty school district, they are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Some of the students in my classroom have delays in various developmental areas. We work hard to ensure they get the best available learning experiences while at school.
Our students are energetic, curious, creative and eagerly waiting to soak up as much knowledge as possible.
They love creating new friendships and participating in all school activities. We work daily on developing the whole child. We help the students enhance their social and emotional skills as well as academics skills. We teach the whole child.
My Project
Having a space like the writing desk for students to practice pre-writing skills, use their imagination and express their creativity is an important space for preschool aged children. The desk will give the students their own space just for writing and creativity. The baskets will give storage for paper, pencils, envelopes, sticky notes, stamps and other items the students can use to write on and use pretend play. My preschool students practice their pre-writing skills everyday but often are cramped at tables as a group and need their own space just for writing. They start with scribbles, lines, pictures and then eventually begin to create letters and numbers to express their thoughts and feelings.
The development of writing skills is a major process that begins as a young child even before they reach school age.
Low level skills in writing can lead to frustration and disbelief in ones own abilities. As children grow and move up in school they will be asked to use their writing skills on a daily basis. Having a good foundation in those skills will make this process so much easier for the students and hopefully create a love of writing in the hearts.
By donating to our project you could be helping develop a future author or journalist. The child sized desk and chair allows a student to have comfort and good posture. Being comfortable in their own space can open up the door for imagination, storytelling, and creativity. We hope to use this new desk as often as possible and can't wait for the stories and scribbles to flow.
