This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The pre-kindergarten classrooms at our elementary school currently serve seventy five students and their families from neighborhoods throughout the city of Pittsburgh. Our students are three to five years old and represent the diverse population of our city, including many English-language learners and students with special needs. The majority of our students meet Federal income requirements for Head Start, meaning that a family of three has a maximum annual income of just over $20,000.
For many of our students, our classrooms are their first experience away from home and in a school setting.
Our students are just beginning their educational journeys, and it is our goal to make learning exciting, fun, and engaging. They are curious and love exploring their environment and the world around them. It is our job to provide what they need to facilitate their learning and growth.
My Project
My students need access to Handwriting Without Tears materials to help develop their fine motor skills and improve alphabet recognition. Materials include slate chalkboards, mini chalk, wooden letter pieces, and letter cards. These materials can be pricey and my school funds are not enough to cover the cost.
My students may be young but they are more than ready to start laying the foundation for proper handwriting skills.
Handwriting Without Tears is a developmentally appropriate curriculum that is perfect for my class. It is research based, uses multi-sensory techniques, and is a lot of fun. It will meet the needs of all of my students, no matter their age or what stage of development they are in. Developing fine motor skills is a long, continuous process and we will use the materials on a daily basis.
