My Students

My first grade students are enthusiastic to come to school and learn. First grade is a year full of growth. It is exciting and fulfilling to work with children as they become readers, writers, mathematicians and so much more! The children in my classroom are from a variety of backgrounds including high income and low income, English and Spanish speaking, and ethnically diverse. Some children have two parents in the home, some have only one parent in their home and some are raised by grandparents or guardians. They come to school full of energy and wonder.

My Project

Good handwriting is a skill that first graders can develop with consistent practice. Even though we live in a digital world, children still need to learn to write legibly.

Special paper with lines that children can see and feel help them understand where to place the letters on the lines.

Dotted lines, raised ruling and specialized paper make good handwriting within reach for young children. Starting with wide lined paper and then progressing to more narrow lines throughout the year makes the transition to notebook paper easier. This project will provide 3 types of paper for the children to use as they develop this skill.
