My students need hands on manipulatives in order to have a concrete understanding of mathematic concepts.

My students are bored with paper and pencil. I want to introduce them to the 21st century by providing them with more hands on experiences in mathematics. I truly believe this will help them develop a deeper and more meaningful understanding of skills that they will need in their everyday life.
A high majority of my students come from low income households.
Ninety-eight percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Because of their home life, my students do not believe that higher education is in their future. For a lot of my students, school is their safe haven. It is their promise they will get a full meal. School is a place where they are able to see adults who care about their education and future. My students see school as a gateway to a meaningful and successful career/life. I want to be able to provide them with hands on activities so that they can be more knowledgeable of basic math concepts. Understanding the importance of these skills shows them that they are able to have a bright future and will be able to move on to high school and be able to go to college.
I truly believe the the donation of these items will change my students understanding of certain math concepts from abstract to concrete. A lot of times using paper and pencil, the students only memorize math processes to get them through their next test. I want them to understand these processes and use them for the rest of their life. Knowing how to do operations with decimals, fractions, and percents are used daily as an adult.
This project will be such an important part of my classroom.
It will provide extra support to my visual and kinesthetic learners. It will provide an activity center where my very active middle school students can release their energy into learning that is beneficial.
