As a teacher of deaf and hard of hearing students at a high poverty elementary school, vocabulary and language development is an ongoing challenge. In addition to teaching young children sign language, we must also work with parents who must learn how to sign. Imagine trying to read to your child in a foreign language and the language was one you were just learning yourself! To assist our children and their parents, we would like to develop family support packages that will include a video, worksheets and related books.
The video, "Sign Me a Story", features Sesame Street actress Linda Bove. Linda and other deaf actors tell stories (Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood). The ability for families and children to access this visual communication is priceless! Developing a sense of story; Tell me about the beginning, middle and end? Can you identify characters and tell someone "what is the problem in the story?"
Use of the video at home and school will help instill a sense of story.
Various books of Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood will give students a variety of versions to read again and again. By learning about the traditional story, children will begin to make connections and appreciate the subtle differences various authors present.
NOTE: I found the video I want to use on a Waldenbooks website. There were 9 copies available of Sign-me-A-Story with Linda Bove, so I will make plans to order those myself. The video is uses sign language, which is such a critical component to enhancing the book presentations.
