My Students

Teaching in a high poverty area, where nearly half of the students are receiving free or reduced rate lunch, there are several challenges that my students face in math class each day. Despite the many challenges, my students are incredibly dedicated to learning each and every day and eager to practice new math skills. My students ARE worth the extra effort. Despite high-stakes tests saying most students are behind grade level, my students inspire me daily, with thoughtful questions and and a constant search for information.

My Project

With the help of the ETA hand2mind fluency kit, my students will gain a deeper understanding of math facts, increase their critical thinking skills and improve their fluency and flexibility with numbers and number concepts.

With this fluency kit, my goal is to help build confidence and flexibility with numbers, in all students, by giving them options and strategies for tackling challenging concepts.

I will use the ETA hand2mind fluency kit during our "ten-minute math" as well as during Math Workshop. Students will get hands on experience with critical math skills and practice strategies for solving problems, to build fluency in math facts. These skills will lay a foundation for my students to master higher level math concepts in the future.
