Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher of students in a low income/single-parent family homes, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many are students with a range of disabilities, emotional disturbance and specific learning disability. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may deprive them of life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
A literacy-rich environment emphasizes the importance of speaking, reading, and writing in the learning of all students. The language and literacy materials that we selected for our classroom will facilitate language and literacy opportunities, reflection and thought regarding classroom design, and intentional instruction and facilitation by teachers and staff.
Students lacking previous experiences with skills such as print awareness, alphabetic principle, and phonemic awareness need supplementary instruction to ensure they do not lag behind their peers.
The circle time learning center will be used during our large group time in the mornings. The learning letters activity set will help reinforce what the students are learning during circle time while they are engaged in free play. The kinetic sand will also be used to promote language and literacy in other areas of the classroom.
Reading is a fundamental skill that defines the academic success or failure of students. Please provide our students with the materials they need to succeed in the future while in our classroom.
