"What time is it?" "When is it time for recess?" As a first grade teacher, these are questions I hear every day. Telling time is also a standard that needs to be taught in first grade. In this modern age of computers and digital clocks and watches, learning how to tell time on an analog clock is a challenge. First graders need hands-on experience with clocks in order to understand the relationship between the hour hand and the minute hand and be able to tell time.
It's easy and fun enough to make paper plate clocks, but the hands do not move the way the hands on a real clock do. The paper clock hands move independently and not in relation to each other. So students do not actually understand the relationship between the hour hand and the minute hand.
In order to give my students more "hands-on" experience, I would like to request a class set of 20 small, geared, analog student teaching clocks and one large "teacher's" clock to help facilitate learning to tell time.
