Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach an elective class called Exploring Technology to over 250 6th-8th graders each semester at the most diverse school (35 AYP goals) in the state. Hands on activities are an integral part of class, with problem solving being a critical component of my curriculum. I have begun collecting "Geo Fix" sets in order to reinforce the geometry being emphasized in the middle school math programs. With these very sturdy reusable materials, students build 3D objects they have learned about and then calculate area, surface area, and volume. Students learn to look at a pattern on paper and then "see" it in their minds. They create the 3D version with Geo Fix materials. They are then taken apart for the next class! The Technology/Problem Solving and excitement is incredible! Once students master the required figures, they are encouraged to draw out their own creations and have other classmates build them! Additionally, they have the option of building incredible polyhedras from "maps or patterns" (very difficult pictures, that they get off the computer. The only constraint we have is the limited Geo-Fix pieces I have in my room. I would appreciate your help in providing this learning tool for my students. Thank you for your consideration.
