This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My first grade students have been busy tackling the Common Core's first grade standards while also concentrating on their specific IEP goals and objectives focused on their language, emotional, and physical needs.
I teach in a high-poverty area in a public city school.
My first graders need grit to face daily challenges both in school and their surroundings. A typical day has my students focused on language, math, technology, and science, while also receiving intervention services in reading, speech, occupational therapy, and more.
My Project
These materials will place problem-solving learning tools directly into my students' hands! Specific tools include counting objects (Color Cubes! Fun Fruits!) and the Lakeshore Manipulative Libraries of mix and match connecting manipulatives. These manipulatives were intentionally chosen to spark imagination!
My math intervention group includes creative thinkers who will benefit from having these developmentally appropriate manipulatives, including Dinosaur Counters, to provide concrete examples of critical math skills.
The materials will be divided and added to target math intervention kits I will be creating. The generous amount of manipulatives will be added to thirty student learning kits. These kits will be accessible to both myself and support staff that work with students needing extra reinforcement on specific math standards. Any extra materials can be checked out by the students to extend learning at home!
