My students need a variety of hands-on science kits and activities to help them meet the new STEM standards for kindergarten. They will integrate it with reading and writing.
Every day is amazing because my students love learning. They are creative, funny, energetic, and eager to learn. Our half-day kindergarten includes reading, writing, math, and science.
Our school is in a middle income city with working parents.
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, families, and experiences. This year most of our students are boys, so we want to incorporate more hands-on activities to meet their needs.
My Project
Kindergartners need experiences that allow them to explore and manipulate materials. Young children learn through hands-on experiences that involve their five senses to create meaning. (The National Association for the Education of Young Children, 2015). Science is often an overlooked subject for young children, but is an important to learning about the world around them (NSW Department of Education, 2015). This grant will allow the kindergarten students to have hands on science activities that are aligned with the new STEM requirements for elementary students. The experiments and activities are age appropriate and designed to meet our students’ needs. The materials would be used in a variety of settings from whole group instruction, center activities for small group activities, and for individual exploration. The science activities and experiments will be integrated with reading and writing activities to create a vibrant curriculum that provides real world learning.
The skills the students will learn from the STEM activities will help them develop a deep understanding of the science curriculum, as well as a real world application for what they are reading and writing.
These are foundational skills that will help them be successful throughout school.
