Help me give my students hands-on activities to make therapy drills more engaging. Students can 'earn' lego bricks or marble run pieces by practicing their speech sounds. Play-doh and water beads make searching or covering targets more fun!
I serve students in kindergarten through 6th grade with a variety of communication disorders. I work with students with articulation disorders, receptive and expressive language delays, social communication and fluency disorders.
Additionally, the majority of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and many lack the exposure to vocabulary and literacy enrichment.
I strive to make my therapy room a nurturing space where students feel safe, respect each other's differences, and help each other to better access the general curriculum.
My Project
Hands-on, cooperative activities make speech therapy more engaging. During articulation sessions, I aim to get 100 productions of a target sound. Students can earn lego bricks or marble run pieces by practicing their sounds.
Positive behavior increases during group therapy sessions when kids have an appropriate task to do with their hands while waiting their turn.
Play dough smash mats and construction activities are great for my younger students. Cosmic putty and escape-room style challenges (see the word combination locks )keep older students engaged. Water beads and other sensory items are enjoyable for all of my students and perfect for targeting mixed groups (language/articulation).
