Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an elementary self-contained Autistic class. My students are 6-year-old males who are full of energy. They are happy and energetic children who learn best through hands-on, engaging lessons. They are all tactile learners.
They are a diverse group of learners who have different interests and learning styles.
One likes to read books and needs constant stimulation. One loves blocks and straight lines, you can always see him taking in new information. One loves music and technology and one loves puzzles and writing.
My Project
The benefits of these sensory tools include calming effects, improving the focus on tasks, increasing fine and gross motor skills, and cognitive development. My goal is to decrease negative behaviors and increase positive interactions between students.
These tools will promote a fun learning environment for my students.
I will be able to have individual work stations going at one time, each working to their individual learning style. The weighted vest will help to calm my student who requires constant movement and stimulation. The dough and grasping tools will improve their fine motor skills so that they can eventually hold a pencil.
