Help me give my students the opportunity to put printed text in their hands and take eyes off their screen by allowing them to explore the Super Science Magazine each month.
Newport students represent incredible diversity. We are lucky to have students from other countries, as well as a great number of students who are transient and come and go from our schools quite frequently. Newport students come from all socioeconomic backgrounds, but 70% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch, meaning they come from poverty to some degree. Many of our struggling students take care of siblings at home, preparing meals, helping with homework, and providing other care. We are also seeing a new population of students who do not speak English as their primary language. This poses new and difficult challenges for our district. We work incredibly hard to meet the needs of all of our students.
Our students show a great passion for their community!
Our city comes together to work toward solutions, to both environmental issues and social concerns. This passion inspires many of our students to do so many voluntary, community-based projects. As teachers, we build on this strength and tie learning to the real world as much as possible.
My Project
In this era of Covid, our young students are spending an incredible amount of time on their computer screens. Unfortunately, for health reasons, it has to be this way. Students cannot share ANYTHING! All of the great science books I have purchased for my classroom library have to be stowed away this year.
By ordering a SuperScience Magazine each month for my fifth grade
science stewards, I'll be giving them an opportunity to hold printed text in their hands, both in school and at home. Having the printed magazines will give them a much needed break from the screen and arouse their curiosity by looking at pictures, reading articles, interpreting graphs, and giving them at home activities to try.
Students need to know what is happening in the environment! Scholastic Super Science chooses relevant and interesting topics to share with students, in a format that is appealing and interesting to all students. It touches upon all different fields of science and technology, so there is something of interest for all learners.
