I have been a teacher for five years. Three of those years, I have worked at an amazing public school on the south side of Chicago. Despite many of their unfortunate situations occurring at home and in their neighborhood, these children come to school with a positive attitude and a thirst for knowledge. In the past three years, our school has gained so much pride through the growth of our test scores and in our students' behavior. I would be so grateful to receive one of the FOSS science kits. These kits are amazing (yet expensive) for all of the wonderful things I have seen it do in the school I was previously working at. It allows students to gain a hands on approach to science. The topics the kits cover are the human body and electricity. The students work cooperatively and explore science through touching, investigating, and exploring. What is so wonderful is that ALL students enjoy this experience! To me what is so gratifying, is to see a student, who may not be the best mathematician or the best writer get excited about learning. These kits have given students the keys to active learning and engagement. I am requesting the electricity and magnetism kit for my fourth grade classroom. It allows students to do activities such as putting together circuits, lighting up bulbs, investigating conductors and insulators, and many other things related to our curriculum. Once it is purchased, it only needs to be restocked for a minimal fee. My school does not have the funds to purchase this kit. This is the first grant that I have written and feel so strongly about the benefit that this kit has for the students' learning and self esteem. These children truly deserve this academic opportunity! Thank you so much for taking the time to read this proposal.
