I teach at a small Title-One school located in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina. Our school is very small and 58% of our students have free or reduced lunch.
I am a second year 5th grade teacher. I enjoy teaching very much, especially science. Most of my students have not traveled far out of North Carolina or even out of our county. With this lack of experience in mind, it is important for their learning to be really hands-on and interactive.
As part of the NC science curriculum, students will be learning all about landforms. Sure, we have textbooks available to read about landforms, but what would be more valuable would be for the students to be able to create their own landform modules. With a science landforms kits such as the FOSS Module, my students would be able to learn about landforms through hands-on investigations. This kit could be reused for several years and would help countless students.
Through the use of the Landforms science kit my students would gain experience with models, maps and with concepts of erosion and deposition. They would also observe the effect of water on surface features of the land by using stream tables to plan and conduct stream-table investigations. Through their investigations, my students would be able to relate processes that they observe in the stream-table models to processes that created famous landforms.
This kit would be a valuable resource for our classroom and the experience would make a significant and measurable impact on the students in my 5th grade classroom.
