My Students

Students in Mild/Moderate Special Day Class are able to integrate complex ideas more readily when they are reinforced through multiple modalities. "Hands on" use of microscopes, and hands on projects related to photovoltaic processes, bring these areas to life for these students.

The students in my mixed 6th,7th, 8th grade , Mild/Moderate, Special Day Class at Los Cerros Middle School, all have identified learning disabilities.

They have Individual Educational Plans. Their skills range from close to grade level, to several years below grade level in some subjects. Their needs cover a broad range of issues such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, autism, ADHS. With direct observation (Microscopes), and "hands on " projects(solar energy materials) , their full individual capabilities are engaged.

My Project

The magic of exploring microscopic worlds has always seemed magical to me. The students in my class may hear about these realms, but to experience it firsthand is not usual. By adding 3 microscopes to the two I have, I can break my class into small teams, allowing more microscope time for each student. Using a document camera to project images is good, but does no replace the personal experience of focusing in on a specimen. The photovoltaic materials will show these students the possibilities awaiting them in the future.

These projects will energize my students participation in Science.

Accessing regular curriculum is not easy for many of my students, but accessing Science through direct participation can really stimulate their curiosity.
