Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have the pleasure of teaching 24 super smart first graders. Unfortunately, my students come from a high-poverty, low socioeconomic community. Ninety-nine percent of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Despite these circumstances, my children are full of spirit and have positive attitudes about learning. They absolutely love coming to school.

These first graders come in each morning with hugs and big smiles on their faces.

They are eager to learn and love for me to teach them new things. I want to make their learning experiences as meaningful and fun as possible.

My Project

My school district cannot afford a science curriculum for my first graders. I try to make science fun for these six and seven year old students, so I pull resources from everywhere. This project is all about ants and butterflies. I am asking for ant farms so my students can observe the daily activities of ants. I'm also asking for butterfly nurseries, so my students can watch the life cycle of the butterfly. We need books about these insects that will help my students investigate these insects further.

With these cool exhibits, my first graders will get an up-close look at the ant's daily routines and the butterflies changing from larva to beautiful butterflies.

My students love hands-on activities, and this project is just perfect to get their little minds learning about our environment.

I am also asking for crayons, watercolors, and paper so that my students can draw, color, and paint the life cycle of the butterfly and the activities of the ants to display on our outside bulletin boards. Little ones need real, hands-on experiences to understand our environment. Please consider a donation to our "Hands on Science for First Graders" project.
