The cost of 16 different science enrichment activities and kits, including the Inflatable Solar System Set, the Butterfly Tower, several videos, and the Magnetic Wands Activity Kit, is $419, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I teach 25 curious, energetic first graders at a Title One (very low income) public school in East New York, Brooklyn. My students *love* science. At six years old, they are natural experimenters who enjoy learning about the world around them. The students are interested in books about science, but they really come alive when they can do interactive, hands-on science activities. Unfortunately, we have access to very few science materials at our school. I am asking for materials that will help me teach several interactive science units:
The Butterfly Life Cycle -- Raising painted lady butterflies was wildly successful with my class last year. I am asking for a new set of butterfly larvae and some supplemental materials to repeat the unit, including magnifying glasses that will be used in many other units as well.
Hermit Crabs -- I would like to have a pair of live hermit crabs as classroom pets. (They are sturdy and non-allergenic). In addition, I would like to forge a science-literacy link based on 'A House for Hermit Crab' by Eric Carle.
Our Solar System -- A scale model of the solar system and a puzzle will add interactivity to our study of the planets.
Magnetism -- I am asking for a magnet exploration kit that my class can use to enhance their understanding of magnetic forces.
I am hoping that a generous donor will provide us with the materials we need to build our observation and questioning skills. Please help me to inspire our next generation of scientists. Thanks.
