Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students are incredibly diverse and come from a wide range of living situations, from homeless to foster care to traditional family structures. In our classroom, our differences are our strengths. We see one another as teachers, mentors, helpers, and, most importantly, as friends and supporters.
We are stakeholders in one another's successes, and go above and beyond for one another.
100 percent of the students in our district receive free breakfast and lunch. Several of the students in my class receive a backpack of food to take home over the weekend. Despite the hardships they endure in their everyday lives, my students arrive at school smiling and happy, eager to begin a day full of exploration and learning. They feel safe, accepted, loved. My joy is knowing that I have had a small part in their journey to being the best they can be each and every day.
My Project
My students currently complete the same basic activities each week using different groups of words to match our phonics principle or target high frequency words, and have become bored with the same old activities. They need new activities to reinvigorate their independent learning centers, and to stretch their literacy learning in new ways. These phonics activities will allow my students to work independently, in pairs and in small groups to explore a variety of reading principles through interesting, engaging, hands-on activities.
Research shows that students who are highly engaged in their learning tend to be more successful in school.
Activities like the Stack and Build Words and Flip and Read Sight Word Sentences will keep my students engaged and learning so many different skills! I can't wait to see the words and sentences they create!
