I teach first grade at a wonderful school that unfortunately has a high level of poverty. To make sure I am able to reach all students at their individual learning levels, I must teach through a variety of techniques and use different methods of instruction daily. However, after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina it is no longer easy for me to purchase needed classroom supplies. With limited space in the classroom, it is important to have functional and versatile items that are able to be used across the curriculum. A magnetic white board/flannel easel with math and reading manipulatives would be highly utilized each day. The white board easel can be used for whole class instruction daily by allowing me to call the students together on our carpet and teach through modeling. The magnetic white board would also be used individually in centers with magnetic letters to reinforce phonics skills and word building strategies. It can also be used with magnetic sentence strips throughout the school year to teach sentence structure, becoming more complex as the year progresses. The flannel board with fairy tale combo would be utilized to teach story structure, creative writing, and story genres. The easel would also be used for math instruction. The base-ten magnets and magnetic money would be incorporated into whole class instruction for modeling and higher order thinking skills. They would also be used in centers as reinforcements of math objectives. The flannel counting pieces would be utilized throughout the school year in a variety of addition and subtraction activities, both whole class and small group. The materials listed would be a great asset for instruction and most importantly can be used by all students in a variety of learning centers for reading, writing, and math.
