My students are a group of diverse, talented, and sweet first graders. Our school is located in a city with high poverty and homelessness. Although we are a small school battling the constraints of a tight economy, we try very hard to provide our students with the tools (both concrete and abstract) to achieve their goals within our community.
Most first graders come into my class as non-readers but leave loving books and reading.
We spend lots of time exploring the awesome things that reading and mathematics can offer us. Throughout the year, my students grow so much that I often can't remember where they were back in September!
My Project
By providing leveled books, as well as hands on materials to engage students while their reading, students will be more inclined to pick up books on their own.
Kids love books, but not all first graders can access grade level texts right away; this project will help with that!
Whisper Phones (feedback phones) and headphones will allow reluctant readers to listen to modeled reading and then hear their own reading. This is great motivation to become a better reader.
The books bins are a place to keep books that first graders know they can read on their own. It allows them the success of being a reader and knowing that they can truly enjoy a good book at any time during our school day.
