How much paper is needed to gift wrap the figures? How much water is needed to fill each figure if you are going to place a goldfish in each shape? How much paint will it take to paint a pyramid in Eygpt?
I teach five 7th grade math classes.
My classes range from basic math to Pre-Algebra. 48% of your students in this public school are on free or reduced price lunch and are in need of calculators. Students work in cooperate learning groups so students are learning how to investigate solving mathematical problems. The grouping teaches students teamwork, mentoring each other and leadership skills.
My Project
Supplies: 6 kits of various polyhedrons and calculators
Students are given the formula to solve surface area and volume, but the hands-on approach engages students in learning. Students can bring in cereal boxes, soda cans and basketballs to demonstrate rectangular prisms, cylinders and spheres but the various pyramids are difficult to bring into the classroom. The various polyhedrons kits ordered will allow students to examine each shape to determine the faces, edges, and the polygons that make up each shape. Students get to layout the 3-D shapes to visualize the different bases on each pyramid. The state allows students to use calculators on the standardized testing. The class set of calculators allows students to quickly solve the surface area and volume which allows more time in the examination of each shape. By having the students ALL use the same type of calculator allows students to arrive at the answers using the same steps when inputting the data.
Hands-on activities are a creative method to make math lessons "less boring!" This lesson allows students to do their calculations on a smaller scale before researching online various buildings.
This lesson also incorporates geography and technology.
