My students are in an all boys residential treatment program. They have been placed for various reasons and do not have access to many technology tools or outside relationships.
I have been tasked with creating a science department in a school that has no lab supplies.
I will be teaching Physics this upcoming year. I am in need of hands on, tactile and engaging supplies that encourage students to think critically about science. These supplies will help my students understand the world of science!
My Project
I realize that I am asking for a big share here. I am building a science department in a small, special needs school on a residential treatment facility for boys where there has never been a science department.
Regular schools have failed these boys.
These boys need hands on, student driven tactile activities to help them achieve higher order thinking skills and understanding of science and STEM principles.
Most comprehensive high schools require students to pay lab fees for their science courses. This helps offset consumable and other supplies. My students do not have this option. Many are wards of the state and have no parent involvement or support. We do not have this option to offset lab costs. This donation of STEM related manipulatives will set these boys up for science success!!
I am asking to purchase 2 K'NEX Roller Coaster Physics sets, 2 K'NEX Real Bridge Building sets and 3 Mouse Trap games to help my students investigate various concepts in physics using the 5E model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend & Evaluate). The K'NEX sets feature hands on, inquiry based lessons to help their understanding of STEM topics. I plan to use the Mouse Trap games as an introduction to Rube Goldberg machines.
