Hands-On Molecule Models for Conceptual Learning

Help me give my students These magnetic molecule kits will be used by everyone in the science department form Biology to AP Chemistry. Hands-on activity to help students will be able to visualize how water molecules connect

This project expired on May 2, 2023.

My Project

All science students learn better and remember more if the learning is hand-on. These magnetic water molecule kits will be available for use by all 13 science teachers in the building. These magnetic water molecule kits will help students understand the complex forces that hold water molecules together and allow it to dissolve so many compounds. These ideas are core topics in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, AP Biology, AP Chemistry and AP Environmental Science. Being able to see the molecules in three dimensions will greatly increase student understanding. Student engagement is also increased significantly when they can manipulate the materials themselves rather than simply use a simulation.

These Models will be used by the entire science department!!

In my IA chemistry and AP Chemistry classes these models will be used the the intermolecular forces unit to help students understand the concept of hydrogen bonding and how it is responsible for the unique characteristics of water (i.e. high boiling point and why ice floats) The conceptual understanding of these concepts has been difficult but these models will change that.
