This year, my fifth grade students will have the opportunity to learn and investigate motion and force. For my students, this unit will provide them with the chance to gain hands-on, minds-on experience with technological designs. Unfortunately, such opportunities require many resources that are currently unavailable to our classroom. In my experience as an educator, science kits are essential elements for quality science instruction. However, my school, where 81% of the students receive free or reduced lunch, doesn't have enough funding to provide such costly resources to my classroom. In order to provide them with engaging and meaningful instruction, I am seeking to obtain a science kit that can be used by my entire classroom. The kit, STC: Motion and Design, channels students' natural curiosity and creativity by enabling them to design, build and investigate their own vehicles. Utilizing K*nex, students will test and re-design their vehicles based on the results of their data and observations. By obtaining this science kit, my students will have the opportunity to spend an entire nine-week instructional quarter studying motion and design. By providing them with hands-on experiences, I will enable them to turn their minds-on to the wonders of technology!!
