My students are ages 5 to 7 years old, they are children who are excited to be at school and they are filled with curiosity and wonder. In my classroom we call ourselves a school family and do lots of team activities and safe circle talking so everyone's voice is heard. Kindergarten is that grade level that is a "different animal" the children come in and need to not only learn pre-academic skills but they also need to work on social and emotional skills. It is also the grade level that has the largest span of skills with students who are ready to start reading and writing from the beginning and those who need to still learn how to hold a pencil. Being that the students ability levels are so different we do lots of centers, play based, hands on, and open ended learning activities to meet everyone's needs. Teaching in this style all of the children make huge gains in their academics, self help, and social skills and enter fist grade read to succeed.
My Project
The materials I chose will be used for in small group reading instruction. These materials will allow my students to practice phonics, phonemic awareness skills, and reading strategies with hands on fun activities. Having many different types of activities for similar skills allows for my students to have lots practice and gain confidence as well as a solid reading foundation. Having many activity choices also allows for lessons to be differentiated making it possible to reach all levels of learners in my classroom.
Hands on engaging materials are key to quality reading instruction.
With exciting fun games, activities, and materials the children will be engaged and excited to learn and practice their reading skills. Kindergarten is the time to build a strong foundation and love for reading and these materials will be a huge help to accomplish these goals.
