This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This fall I will be returning to an elementary classroom for the first time in 8 years. I will be teaching 4th grade at a wonderful community school in Florida. While I don't know my specific students yet, I have met the students at the school and have learned the following about them:
* They are sweet and curious, thirsting for knowledge about the world around them and are quick to ask questions about almost everything new they encounter.
* They are problem-solvers and have a perseverance that is very rare in children this age. Whether it's reading a difficult text, or working a challenging math problem, they are dedicated to meeting the challenges that come their way.
* They are without many advantages that their peers have, and that is why I am creating this project. I want to provide them with a learning environment that will meet their needs and excite their minds. They so deserve it!
My Project
With the challenges presented by Common Core standards, the expectations for mastering math and reading have jumped up several levels. Research shows that one of the best ways to teach math includes opportunities for students to explore difficult concepts in a hands-on format, experiencing, not just watching. In addition, close, skill-specific interaction with text will help struggling students make significant gains in reading. This project is designed to put these best practices in action.
With the quality materials in these Hands-On Math Teaching Kits, and Reading Intervention kits, my students will explore difficult concepts in a manner that encourages experimentation and real-world application.
Concepts such as place value and fractions, as well as using reading as a TOOL for learning, will be easier to master with materials that foster interaction, cooperation, and first-hand exposure!
