This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school located in the South side of Chicago, my students are faced with so many challenges in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am determined to close the achievement gap and provide my students with meaningful learning experiences that meet their academic as well as emotional needs.
My students are inquisitive and love to showcase how their brains are growing.
Their enthusiasm for learning is contagious. The excitement they exude when they learn to read new words is so heartwarming.
Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive free meals based on their socioeconomic status. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. By planning engaging and thoughtful lessons, I hope to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic success.
My Project
My students need kinesthetic, hands-on manipulatives and games that focus on letter recognition, making words and writing. Students will explore these resources at our independent reading and writing centers, learning letters and sounds as they make words in a kinesthetic, tactile modality. They will use these materials to explore through building, drawing, making letters and sounds, and then words! Allowing students to touch, feel and create letters and words will support their ability to make connections and retain what they learn. Your generous donation to our project will improve my kindergarten classroom by building a stronger reader and writer.
This will impact my students by feeling success at an early age having fun while learning!
