Help me give my students a hands-on learning mathematical environment with tangibles and math manipulatives that can make their learning unforgettable.
I teach at a middle school in Northeast Philadelphia. It includes grades 6th-8th. At my school, we have a diverse population. We sit at 36% of our population being students who are identified with special needs. Our school consists of inclusion classrooms, as well as 4 self-contained classes. We have an advisory class when the entire population is integrated with each other.
My school has transitioned to a project-based learning school using STEM, to better prepare our students to be global-minded citizens in this world.
We want to teach them the "newfangled" 21st Century skills that are necessary to survive in the world today. In our quest, we are making our classrooms more student-friendly, welcoming and comfortable.
My Project
It is important for my students to have hands-on access to different types of math manipulatives in order to continue to demonstrate mathematical knowledge. When using the hands-on approach, it gives my students the opportunity to have a more real-world application to math. Students learn best when they are able to apply their knowledge to the real world. The students will use these items to create games, fine tune their math computation skills, and enjoy math in ways they never thought possible.
Math is not the easiest subject for everyone, and it is my goal to make it as enjoyable and pleasurable for everyone without creating a disdain for the subject.
I want my students to have a positive attitude towards math, and with these items, I believe it will help create the positive environment I am envisioning.
