Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have a wide range of physical, emotional, and academic needs. The disabilities range within the classroom from down syndrome, autism, emotional disturbance, and other health impairments. The students are in 3rd-6th grade but cognitively there are students functioning lower than an average 3-year-old. Most of the students are Hispanic and come from farm working, low-income families that are just barely getting by.
School is a safe haven and a place for these students to learn how to become successful and productive members of society.
We focus on the skills in life that someone would need to become independent and successful. It looks different for every student and there are varying degrees of success but that does not stop either teacher or students from trying every day. I have been with some of these students for over 4 years and continue to work every day to educate and improve their overall quality of life.
These students are not easy to manage and this classroom setting comes with behavioral problems. I love my job and love what I do every day trying to help these kids.
My Project
Learning math concepts can be complicated and become confusing. Having materials with manipulatives that are hands-on can help students grasp the concepts. The materials are able to be adapted to different levels so all students will have access no matter what their level is. Getting the complete box sets helps everyone in the class. The Magnetic Math Rods will help students that have trouble with fine motors skills. The Math Folder Game Libraries will help
Getting materials for math that are tactile is another way to teach concepts that are traditionally hard for students with learning disabilities.
These materials will open opportunities for students to work independently in small groups and be successful. We can make the learning meaningful and fun by introducing new games and ways to learn math.
