This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach first grade in a small urban school. My students are enthusiastic balls of energy! We are part of a learning community that values participation and hard work. Our school is culturally and linguistically diverse and receives title one funds.

We are a high performing school, usually meeting or exceeding the state averages on state testing.

We have a great school climate where students feel safe and loved. Despite many challenges in our students' lives, they come to school every day excited to be here!

My Project

My students need rekenreks in order to develop their number sense. When we have them to use we will be able to have fun while developing our adding and subtracting skills to 20! My students need to have lots of experience with hands on mathematics in order to develop their number sense and these rekenreks will support that goal.

Adding will be a snap using rekenreks!

They will just have to slide the beads back and forth instead of slowly using counters. I will also be able to demonstrate and talk about the parts of 10 using my giant magnetic rekenrek in front of the class.
