My students need hands-on math materials such as geometric shapes, ten-frames, base 10 blocks and more to help them become successful in everyday math activities. I believe these materials will help provide a great foundation.
My first grade classroom is a place where we investigate, learn, play and ALWAYS do our best. My students attend a Title 1 school, which means 95% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. They are from various socioeconomic backgrounds and some from single parent homes. Most students from single parent homes do not have adults to help them with their academics due to working long hours. Other students range from below-grade level to on-grade level in reading and number sense.
These first graders are full of energy and very active.
They enjoy hands on learning and are always ready to learn!
My Project
Hands-on materials can help students become successful learners. I requested base-ten blocks to help build a foundation of number sense. I believe these will allow students the opportunity to build and break apart numbers. Using a visual can help them grasp the concept and truly understand what they are doing.
I believe 3-D shapes can provide a great visual for students during our geometry lessons.
Students can benefit from getting their own shapes and noticing attributes of each. They will also be allowed the time to really study the shapes and come up with their own definition of each.
Math is something that is used in life daily. My goal is to provide my students with a solid foundation that they can build upon each year. I honestly believe by providing them with this foundation they will better understand math and apply it throughout the rest of their education experience.
