This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are full of energy and enthusiasm for learning. They all come from at-risk homes where they are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. 100% of the students that I teach receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Many of them are being raised in single parent households. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with a safe, inviting environment where they can meet their highest potential.
My students aim to please you and look to me for love and support in their learning, whether it is a challenge or a strength.
My Project
These hands on manipulatives and games provide students with the concrete materials needed to get a deeper understanding of difficult concepts, such as fractions and operational number sense.
By providing each individual child with a set of fraction rods to manipulate for themselves, they help to solidify their understanding of equivalency.
These fraction rods allow the students to build on top of each other so they see how two-fourths is equivalent to one-half.
The operational number sense, specific to basic multiplication and division is an ongoing skill and standard that must be mastered in 3rd grade. The more practice the students get, the more fluent they will become with those skills.
