As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they always come to school eager and ready to learn.
My students are inquisitive and always keep me on my toes!
They come from a variety of home living situations, but from the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
The Magformers will be used in math to allow students a hands-on opportunity to make three dimensional shapes. It is sometimes difficult for students to understand what 2D shapes actually make 3D shapes. Many students also struggle with visually understanding what 3D shapes look like because they may only see them on a piece of paper.
Using math manipulatives are essential for some students to learn new material.
"WE REMEMBER 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we see and hear, 70% of what we discuss with others, 80% of what we personally experience, 95% or what we teach others". - Edgar Dale
Students learn in a variety of ways, with a major way being kinesthetically. This means they need to physically experience something to better learn it. The Magformers will give students an experience they are currently not getting, which in turn will allow them to learn better.
