My students need hands on math materials for intervention. Because young children learn best by doing, they will gain a better understanding of the math concepts.
"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." Confucius had to be referring to a kindergartener when this was quoted. As a teacher for twenty five years, I have discovered that small children learn best by doing.
I teach a class of twenty, five and six year olds.
Our school is considered a high poverty school in Middle Tennessee. The students' ability ranges from students who are ready to begin reading to those who recognize very few letters. They are an energetic group who arrive each day with a smile and an eagerness to learn.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting will provide my current students, and those in the future, many fun, engaging, hands-on centers designed to explore math through manipulatives. As a teacher of kindergarteners, it is my job to lay a solid foundation for my students. Young students need many experiences to sort, count, add, and subtract using real objects. They will be able to prove that the Confucius quote -"...I do and I understand. " is really true! Kindergarten is one of the most important grades in a child's education. For many, this year in the child's life will most likely determine the child and family's attitude toward school. They will like school or not. I hope to inspire curiosity and interest in math by incorporating these math materials into my curriculum.
School is a place of learning.
Who says it can't be fun and engaging as well? I have learned that if you want young children to remember something, you either have to add music and sing it with them or let them experience it with manipulatives. Since I'm not the best singer, I am requesting these math materials to engage my students in a variety of hand-on math experiences.
