Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very unique third graders, eager to learn. Located in the heart of Springfield, MA, my students learn in an older school lacking many of the modern amenities of our suburban neighbors. Ninety percent of our students are considered low income, with 100% of our students receiving free lunch and many living in low-income houses. In addition, many of our students come in hungry, don't have the proper clothing for the weather, and lack basic school materials. Dealing with struggles beyond their maturity level, each one comes in ready to exceed expectations.
"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn"-Ignacio Estrada.
In the 21st century, my students are very eager to learn despite their home-life issues.
Kids work hard every day to learn something new and to better themselves. Despite difficulties at home, each day is a new day at school!
I want to be able to provide our students with as many opportunities and materials as possible that they otherwise wouldn't have.
My Project
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, students have had limited access to materials that they would normally have in the classroom.
Now that it is finalized that our district will be fully remote, our students now, more than ever need access to Math materials while at home.
These Math materials will be sent home to families so that they have the proper manipulatives for their virtual lessons. Students need hands on materials to learn new concepts such as multiplication and division in the Third Grade. Many students are able to utilize digital manipulatives, but those only reach a portion of the students. Especially now, we need to make sure we can close the gaps in as many ways as possible. For example, the Place Value blocks will enable students to understand and internalize number sense, which is a foundation for all mathematics.
Your donation will help students have one less stressor while struggling to learn at home!
