My students need hands-on materials like a Data Chance Kit; a Hands-On Statistics Probability and Graphing Kit; and 30 dry-erase graphing boards to make statistics fun and engaging.
I teach an energetic and enthusiastic group of 6th graders. Always ready to learn, my students love to work together. 6th grade is a crucial year for math. Students dig deeper into math than they ever have before. Hands-on learning experiences are key.
The 6th grade math curriculum in our state dives deep into the topic of statistics (mean, median, mode, mean absolute deviation, and box-and-whisker plots) and the best way to enhance our statistics unit and make it more engaging is to make it hands-on.
My Project
In our statistics unit, students will learn how to determine the mean, median, and mode of a data set. They will also be required to graph data, determine the mean absolute deviation of a data set, find the five number summary of a data set, and create box-and-whisker plots. I have found that when students are able to put their hands on materials and manipulate them, it makes abstract concepts more concrete. I am asking for a Data Chance Kit; a Hands-On Statistics Probability and Graphing Kit; and 30 dry-erase graphing boards. My students will use these materials to engage their minds and become the BEST statisticians they can be.
Hands-on learning engages the student's mind.
These statistics materials will help to engage my students in their study of statistics and make it more fun. The more engaged my students become in their learning, the more likely they will be to retain their learning.
