Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This was my first year as a full time teacher. I served underprivileged children in the San Jose area. The vast majority of my fourth grade students are English language learners. So many of them were behind in reading at the beginning of the year, and I spent lots of time trying to help them catch up in that area. Next year, I would like to help my students to improve their math skills. Although they made progress this year, word problems, fractions, and geometry were a challenge. With better materials, they can better understand math concepts. Math books alone do not provide a balanced math curriculum. Hands-on manipulatives are needed to keep us thinking out of the box. We could really use class sets of these items: Geoboards, fraction manipulatives, Cuisenaire rods, Super Source Books for Geoboards and Cuisenaire rods. These products are great for students to actually see what fractions look like, making them far less abstract than numbers on a sheet of paper. They are also great for comparing fractions. I have just finished taking a class on math instruction and would love to get some of my new ideas off the ground for helping these kids to conceptualize math. Thank you so much for helping me and my diverse learners continue to battle for a quality education. You are truly making a difference in their lives.
