Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to explore their worlds and learning about everything! However, it can be very difficult to make learning meaningful without fun and engaging materials that are important to my students. My students need manipulatives and games to bring learning math to life.
My 22 students attend a small, urban school in Maryland.
They are engaging, loving and so excited to learn and interact with their world. My group is representative of our school as a whole; we have a very diverse population of students. My classroom, roughly, has 1/3 Hispanic, 1/3 African American and 1/3 white students. The languages spoken and the countries from where my students' families come from are even more diverse.
My students are all a group of loving friends who truly care about each other and their learning. They work so well together and really help one another with their school work.
My Project
I am requesting materials so that I can bring math learning to life for my young learners. Specifically, I am looking to obtain fun, colorful math manipulatives such as sea creature counters, vehicle counters, and wild animal counters. I am also seeking counting games that reflect what my students like to learn about, such as a Cookie Counting game. To help my students sort meaningful materials, I am requesting color sorters with real, tangible items.
All of these materials will help give real-life context for learning math. These games and materials will help us to connect learning in the classroom to our lives outside, and to the various books we read throughout the year.
While my students have done an exceptional job so far this year, learning math has not been nearly as engaging or fun as it should have been.
My students love to work hard, but without fun and engaging materials that relate science and social studies themes to math, their learning tends to fall short by not providing a real-life context. Sorting and counting photos of sea animals is not nearly as fun as real manipulatives and toys! Help my students bring real-life context to learning math!
