Despite the difficult economic hardships my students face, they greet me each day with a smile on their face ready to learn. Each morning students eat breakfast on our classroom before our academics begin.
Our Michigan Elementary Title 1 students are wonderful.
Our goal as a staff is to create life long learners. Students today are the future leaders tomorrow. These 6 and 7 year olds that fill my room will be future caregivers to our world. They love learning!
My Project
Developing a math classroom culture that supports productive struggle is essential.
This hands on exploring and practice will provide students with a variety of ways to help solve real world math problems.
Students will then be able to find the strategy that works best for them through shared learning.
These hands on math manipulatives will help my 1st graders grasp the addition and subtraction strategies of Ten-Frames, bar model, number bonds, and place value. These tools can be used in whole group, small group, and independent practice.
Students will have the opportunity to analyze why they chose a specific strategy, explain how they solved it, and examine if the answer makes sense. This "think it out" process will help support the understanding of the strategy.
