Help me give my students counting puzzles, number match-ups, and addition and subtraction activities to practice early math skills in an engaging and hands-on way.
My kindergarten and 1st-grade students are eager and thoughtful learners. Though small in size, they have gracious hearts, resilient spirits, and limitless curiosities. They challenge me every day to be more responsive, innovative, and understanding of difference. I'm lucky to be their teacher.
Our neighborhood is known to be one of the most diverse in the country and every classroom in our school reflects that gift.
In addition to the richness that such diversity brings, we also recognize that different opportunities and experiences in early childhood can create inequitable beginnings for children entering school. As a school community, we know without a doubt that all of our students are highly capable and work with determination to ensure that every student has the resources, instruction, and support necessary to achieve success.
My Project
Kindergarten and 1st grade is a time of tremendous growth for students. In math, they learn their numbers, the counting sequence, and begin to relate numerals to quantities. As they develop these understandings, they put numbers together and take parts away from a whole as the beginnings of addition and subtraction. They launch from these building blocks to delve into more complex concepts like using symbols to represent "putting together" and "taking away" in written equations and using a variety of mental strategies to solve problems with greater and greater quantities.
Concrete experiences with real, tangible materials are essential for students developing these early math skills.
Students must be able to touch, move, and count. The counting puzzles, number match-ups, and addition and subtraction activities donated from this project will allow students to do just that during our independent work times. Students will practice counting and matching quantities using the counting puzzles and will practice ordering numbers 1-30 using other puzzle sets. Students will also build quantities and explore part-whole relationships of addition and subtraction using the ten-frame builders, number bars, and equation match-ups donated from this project. These materials will give students the hands-on practice that they need to develop full and flexible understandings of numbers in engaging and memorable ways.
